In 2005, the largest survey ever undertaken for youth spirituality was done by UNC Chapel Hill in a book entitled Soul Searching. In their finding they share several important facts:
  • “More highly religiously active teenagers are doing significantly better in life on a variety of important outcomes than are less religiously active teens.”
  • “Nearly four in ten U.S. teens are involved in a religious youth group and have been for multiple years. About seven in ten have been involved in a religious youth group at some time in their lives.”
  • “Many … teenagers are themselves engaged in a kind of search for their own souls – trying to sort through their life and faith identity, belief, commitments, and practices in their long passage from childhood to adulthood.”

The Youth Ministry of First Baptist Church, Hillsborough exists to reach youth with the good news of Jesus Christ, that they may be mentored in their relationship with God and glorify Him with their lives as they fellowship with one another and serve others in Christian love.

This mission statement is meant to be in conjunction with the overall church mission statement. In it, you will find the aspects of testimony, discipleship, worship and fellowship. Our youth activities are consequently planned around these aspects of ministry to support a well-balanced youth program. Every month, we have an activity strictly intended to promote fellowship. This may include a trip to the movies, bowling, lock-ins, ect. We also have monthly testimony activities. This can take on the form of a mission project like painting someone's house, visiting the nursing homes or raking the yards of senior adults. The monthly testimony activity can also be more of an outreach event in which we are trying to get inactive youth involved, reaching out to the unchurched in our community or heading off to Summer Camp to do mission work. Every Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday nights, we have times of discipleship in the form of Sunday School, Youth Bible Studies and Missions Education. We welcome any youth to join us as we seek to join God in His ministry.
