Why Church?Why Church?
Since Jesus ascended before the disciples’ eyes in a moment recorded in Acts 1, the disciples of Jesus have gathered together for prayer, teaching, support, meals, and to live life together. The disciples of Jesus have gone together into the world to share the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection, to serve one another and neighbors, to offer cups of cold water in Jesus’ name, and to learn to love others near and far as we love ourselves. The gathering and the going of the disciples is the heart of what is called “church.”
There are probably many words that come to mind when the word “church” is spoken. Unfortunately, not all of the words are good ones. But, one word comes to mind that continues to witness to the world why church remains essential: community. There is community in the church that is based on our common faith in Jesus Christ. It is community that crosses all the lines we draw for ourselves to keep us separated. It is community that invites every person regardless of the characteristics of that person to come and be with others in Christ’s name.
We are made for community. First Baptist Church of Hillsborough is not a perfect community, but we are working diligently to be a community that reflects the love of Jesus Christ to each other and to the world. You will be welcomed among us: welcomed to gather and grow in Christ and welcomed to go with others into the world with the hope of Christ.
