At First Baptist Church, every follower of Jesus Christ is a minister:

"You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
1 Peter 2.9

Our conviction is that each member of FBC Hillsborough will find a place of ministry that complements his or her gifts and passions. For the church to grow in its worship, discipleship, and testimony, we must all come to see ourselves as fellow ministers of the good news of Jesus Christ.

Rev. Randy Carter

I have been privileged to serve as pastor with First Baptist Church of Hillsborough since August 2003. I grew up in Austin and Houston, TX…a state I like to refer to as the “promised land.” I have no real desire to return unless a group gets serious about secession and declaring Texas a sovereign nation again. I might have to go back for that! Until then, we’ll keep driving there to visit our families.

After college in TX, I completed my M.Div. degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary just outside of San Francisco. While in seminary, I served as a campus minister at San Francisco State University with the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. In the summer of 1998, we moved to NC and I attended the Divinity School at Duke University, completing my Th.M. in 2001.

I am married to Rebecca—a really good deal for me and for Rebecca, well…she’s an angel! We have three home-grown children: Wesley, Jeremy, and Avery, as well as three foster children: Olivia, Justin, and Valerie. There is no lack of excitement in the Carter household.

I look forward each day to the challenges and graces of God’s call with the church.
