Maddry Family Photosby Reginald Carter, Church Historian
Charles Edward Maddry (1876-1962) was born in Chapel Hill and grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina. He was the eldest of seven children born to William Alexander and Julia R. Suggs Maddry. He attended the University of North Carolina from 1898 to 1903 and served his first pastorate at our church from 1901-1904. He married Emma Parker (1881-1973) of Hillsborough in May 1906. They had only one child, Katherine, born in December 1907. Katherine also attended the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1930. She married Robert Watson Severance from Florence South Carolina. He was a graduate of Furman University School of Library Science. In 1940, Robert joined the faculty of Baylor University in Waco, Texas and remained there until 1953. Robert and Katherine had three children: Katherine (Kay) b. 1935, Robert b. 1938 and Sarah b. 1941.
The photographs shown here are from a collection of photographs donated to the church by Ron Thomas, the husband of Katherine (Kay) Severance, the eldest grandchild of Dr. and Mrs. Maddry. Katherine died in 2010 and had her funeral held at First Baptist where her grandfather both began his first ministry (1901) and finished his last ministry (1957).
The photograph on the left shows Dr. Maddry with his three grandchildren and was taken in 1944. Sarah is on his lap while Robert sits on the armchair and Katherine (Kay) stands behind the chair. The photograph on the right was taken in 1950 with Sarah, Dr. Maddry, Mrs. Maddry and Robert seated on the couch while Katherine, Robert and Katherine (Kay) stand in back.
The photographs included in the Maddry family collection span a period of 20 years, from 1937 to 1957 and are a valuable addition to our archives. We are most grateful to Ron Thomas for his donation.
